Solving Outlook 2010 – “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook cannot open the Outlook Window.”

After removing my Office 2010 CTP version and install the Office 2010 Beta back in November 2010, I encounter the problem of not able to use my Outlook 2010 Beta. I was getting the following popup window:

After trying the following methods:

1. Log the error in the “Microsoft.beta.o14.client.outlook Forum” (special Thanks to all that try to help me).

2. Uninstall/reinstall Outlook 2010 client with no luck.

3. Make sure all Outlook files, including the hidden ones, and Temp folders were remove from the disk. Didn’t work.

4. Even try to use the “/resetnavpane” outlook switch with no luck.

5. And, got nasty with the registry – no luck here neither.

I was still getting the same popup error message and not able to open my Outlook. Very Frustrating!!  I was to the point of … Do I need to rebuild my laptop?  HELL NO!!  Then, I decided to attack the issue again and try to fix it.

I realized the Outlook Setup Wizard wasn’t starting (hint!!). So, I decide to search for “Outlook connection Wizard not starting” and I found this blog about “Set Up Outlook for Exchange 2010”: http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/dd253202.aspx. Although, this was not related to the problem I was having but indirectly lead me in the right direction.

With my previous Office 2010 CTP version, I was able to setup my emails and after removing the application to install the Beta, I lost. I realized now the un-install didn’t remove some folders. The “Outlook Files” folder contain my older version *PST file, still exist in my user “Documents”.

So, here’s HOW-TO clear the error:

1. Go to your Document folder.

2. Delete the "Outlook Files" folder.

3. Then, open "Control Panel", Click on "User Accounts" and then "Mail".

4. In "Mail", remove all the emails you setup for the previous email client.

5. Create new email account(s) and pick the default email address.

After these steps, you Outlook 2010 Beta application should open without any errors.

That’s it!!!  This is how I solved my problem and clear the error.

Hope someone will benefit from this blog.

Hey there this is somewhat of off topic but I was wanting to
know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!

you can try to perform a quick repair the existing office installation.
I don’t recommend an online installation as it may reset the activation settings.
